You handed your dog over why?!

There are many genuine reasons why people have to hand over their dogs to us, whether it be family or financial reasons. Most reasons are through no fault of the dogs or the owners; it's just circumstance, we understand that.

Then you have the other, more obscure and mostly unbelievable reasons. So this Christmas we have researched our handovers and found the top ten worst reasons for handing over a dog - and yes, they are all true...

  1. My dog doesn’t match the sofa.
  2. The dog looks evil and has different coloured eyes, just like David Bowie.
  3. My black dog doesn’t match new white carpet, can we swap him for a white dog?
  4. My current dog is too old, can we swap for a puppy or younger model?
  5. My dog ate the Christmas turkey cooling on the worktop.
  6. My pet guinea pig got worried with a dog in the house.
  7. The dog opened all the presents on Christmas Eve.
  8. The owner accidently knelt in dog wee while cleaning it up so brought the dog in the very next day.
  9. The puppy was bought as a present for elderly couple with dementia.
  10. The owner was paranoid about recent bad press on Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and the dog was given up through no fault of its own.

and my own personal favourite

" We couldn't bond with the dog" - They had had him 90 minutes!

Scarily enough I can actually believe those reasons.

Which is why I am so glad there are people like you to help make a difference.

Couldn't bond with the dog... Maybe they were married 30 minutes after they met and so they consider 90 minutes to have been more than fair opportunity for the dog to demonstrate his undying loyalty.

We are 2 Maltese dogs, and LoLLy is a rescue, and we will not discuss the unspeakable things from her life before she lived in our pack with decent humans. Yes, it is shocking how limited the humans can be. We are not bling. Get a new pair of shoes, not a living creature, if you want to be so careless. Thank you for all that you do, Love, Your PaLs, LuLu and LoLLy. http://www.luluandlolly.com

I know the Guinea pig one. Junior had that particular reason. 2 days he lasted. Mind you what do you expect from a pointer cross?

We have just taken on a dog (we heard about him on doggysnaps.com, the Dogs Trust fan site) who was due to be put down because he wagged his tail too much and might harm a three year old. Max was taken in by one of the members of doggysnaps and we picked him up two days ago to join our other two in our kennel. Those two are both Dogs Trust dogs. Max now has a forever home with us.

And in answer to the question posed on the blog, we can believe that reasons like that could be given.

Our rescue dog Holly was handed back to the local rescue centre because -
she couldn't go longer than 8 hours without wanting to wee!!!! Who can!!!
She's car sick - well if they had dealt with the ear infection she wouldn't be so car sick
She jumps 3 ft fences - no she wrigles under fences, which for us having sheep means she great for checking where lambs can get out from a field.
Holly has staff!! She's been with us now for over 4 years and is the happiest dog we know. We wouldn't swop her for the world.

@ no 7 - WTF?! My dog loves my guinea pigs - because she's been brought up correctly and was taught from being a pup to tolerate them. Common sense, surely!

I kept shaking my head in disbelief and some of the pathetic reasons people got rid of their dog!! And if asked no doubt they'd claim to be dog lovers!!! b*****s!!! Thank dog for the many loving people who give a rescue dog a forever, loving home!
