Contact your MP to help stop Greyhounds disappearing

It is estimated that every year thousands of Greyhounds disappear... both those who have ended their racing career and those bred for the sport who never made it to the track.

The Government has proposed some regulations but they don't go nearly far enough - Greyhounds are still not protected from cradle to grave.

But you can help us try to change this.

1. Write to your MP

This is the single most important thing you can do - get their attention, make sure they know about the issue and urge them to push for better regulation. There's a template letter below.
Dear [MP]

I am writing to urge you to support Dogs Trust in campaigning for stronger measures to protect Greyhounds from cradle to grave.

Following the passing of the Animal Welfare Act in 2006 two investigations into the welfare of racing Greyhounds were undertaken. In response to the findings of these investigations the Government committed to introducing regulations to address the main welfare problems associated with Greyhound racing.

The proposed regulations do not go far enough and focus too much on the Greyhounds whilst at the tracks. There are no proposed regulations to ensure the welfare of the dogs when they are in their kennels where they spend around 90% of their time. The problem of Greyhounds disappearing from the sport is also largely ignored.

Please contact the Dogs Trust press office on 0207 837 0006 / pressoffice@dogstrust.org.uk to find out more, so no Greyhound need ever suffer again.

Yours sincerely,

[Name]

2. Share the story

Share the following links with likeminded friends and family:

- This is a video about the campaign - put it on your website / anywhere you think it will help to spread the word (with permission if it's someone else's site).

Together we can try to make sure these dogs are protected for life.
