Urgent rehoming appeal: Toby the Dalmatian pup

Dogs Trust Darlington is today making an urgent rehoming appeal for one of their most unfortunate canine residents. Sadly, poor eight month old Dalmatian Toby is unlikely to live beyond the age of two because of a digestive illness.

Sue Embleton, Dogs Trust Centre Manager, explains:

“Toby has megaesophagus, a congenital condition meaning food does not pass through to his stomach properly. He needs small, frequent meals and should be held up in a begging position while eating so gravity can help the food move down his oesophagus.

It’s heartbreaking that he is unlikely to live beyond the age of two, but we’d love to find him a caring home where he can enjoy the time he does have.”

His previous owners brought him to the Sadberge centre when they were unable to care for him any longer. Toby cannot be kept in the kennel environment because he is susceptible to infections so staff are making an urgent appeal for a foster home.

New owners need not worry about Toby’s medical bills as Dogs Trust will cover the expense. He would settle in best in a calm home without young children or other pets.

If you are interested in rehoming Toby please call the centre directly on 01325 333 114.

I have a dalmatian and there amazing dogs, we always mix water in with our dogs food, as this helps keeps bladder stones at bay, maybe it would help him pass his food better? I really hope he finds a loving caring home to spoil him with hugs and kisses.

I live in the states. I'd take him in a heartbeat if it were possible. I hope he finds a good calm home.

I would love to help but I already have three dogs, two of which are quite wild and I really don't think that this would be the ideal environment - hope someone out there can give him the love and home that he needs.

So sad. I rescued a dog a few years back. If I was in a position to take the pup I would in a heartbeat.

I have a friend with a Standard Poodle who has megaesophagus. He was told the dog would not grow to full size and wouldn't live very long. Radar is now a very large Standard Poodle who has, so far, reached the age of eleven years. He has had no special care. His only problem is that he regurgitates his food when he gets stressed.

This story made me cry. I hope against hope that Toby finds a loving home. Hubby and I would love to have him, but can't because we have a very lively Labrador already.

I would give Toby a new home in a second, if it were not for the 3 dogs and 2 lively chickens we already have! I am in tears reading about his sad position and REALLY hope he finds a wonderful home ASAP so he can enjoy what time he has left. Well done Dogs Trust for your support with Toby and all the other dogs that unfortunatley need your help. x

we fostered a great little dog called bernard, he had heart, lung and liver problems and was only supposed to live for 2-3 months but we had him for 3 wonderful years and although it was very sad when he passed, we would take on another one like him in a heart beat, as we did and have another three now so cant take anymore right now but its so reqarding i would recommend it to everyone.

Toby, really sorry I can't help you out directly but you have motivated me to make a donation to DT to help out in some small way.

@Katy - I've passed on your suggestion to the centre, thank you!

@Richard - Thank you very much that's very kind indeed.

I was in tears after reading about Toby. Can you tell me where he is?? I am in New York. I will call everyone I know who may be looking to give this boy a home but I need to know where he would be coming from. I apologize for not knowing but I just found you on Facebook.

Hi Donna, thanks for your concern. Toby's in the UK, in Darlington.

Thanks all for the messages of support and spreading the word.

Hi there I have heard about Toby this morning and have read all the previous postings, does the home he goes to have to be dog and child free, as a home at all would be better than kennels?

Dogs Trust said...

@Kness - I couldn't say for sure, but please do call the centre to discuss it. :)

Has Toby found a home yet???

There's a very good chance Toby will be going home with one of our volunteers who has been helping care for him and has bonded with him.

His health has also stabilised to the point that there are hopes he will live longer than predicted.

I'll update fully when I know for sure. :)

Hi I have a Dalmatian she is called Millie (5yrs)old, We would love for Toby to come to stay with us but I see from the post that he needs a home with no other dogs and no children but I also have a daughter (Louisa) who is 3yrs who loves Millie with all her heart, Louisa treats Millie like a sister, So Toby we are praying for you and hope you prove them all wrong and live a long life.

P.S We are looking to add to our family if anyone has a dalmatian that needs a loving and very caring home please let us know? I think Millie would love another friend to run in the hills by our home..
