Waggy-Tailed West Calder Look-alikes

There is a unique situation happening at Dogs Trust West Calder!  The centre have had a flood of white dogs that have similar breeds, ages and characteristics.  Unfortunately these loving pooches aren't finding homes as quickly as we would hope.  The staff at the centre think that because they are so alike, they are being overlooked as a whole.

All these dogs are incredibly playful individuals who would love to find their loving forever homes. Below is some more information on each white, wag-tailed dog.

Diesel

Fun loving Diesel is a 2 year old English Bull Terrier cross, who loves nothing more than being outside as much as possible. He is an energetic, playful boy whose favourite thing is to go for long walks and roll in the grass, especially on sunny days. Diesel loves to explore new places and he travels very well in the car.

Although he enjoys his active lifestyle, he is a big fan of cuddles and loves attention. He would prefer to be the only pet in the home. Diesel needs an active, all adult home with owners that are able to keep up with him and who are able to settle him into a routine.

Buddy

 

Buddy is a 3 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross Lurcher. He is a happy lad who loves being the centre of attention. Buddy is very loving and he just adores getting his ears scratched. He is full of energy and loves playing with his ball - he would fetch it all day long!

Buddy is deaf and can get frustrated easily. He is looking for owners who have had some experience in dealing with deaf dogs before, or someone with time and patience to help teach and guide Buddy. He is fully house trained and is happy being left alone for short periods of time.

Deaf dogs can have a perfectly normal life and can be trained fairly easily once both the dog and the owner have got the hang of a few basic principles – the most important of which is that you have to train using hand signals instead of verbal commands. Jake

This handsome boy is Jake. He is a 3 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Jake has a very cheeky personality and can easily make you smile. This gorgeous lad is very happy and full of fun. His favourite thing to do it to play with his toys, he likes the squeaky ones the best! He also loves going for long walks to explore and adores trips away in the car.

Jake would prefer to be the only pet in the house as he likes having his owners all to himself. He is looking for an active, adult home who have had experience with SBT types. He can be easily distracted and needs someone who can allow him to settle at home and who can give him their undivided attention.

Maisie

Maisie, a 1½ year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross, is a very sweet and gentle girl who adores getting attention from people. She loves to roll on her back and have her belly rubbed. This beautiful lass loves to play catch, it’s her favourite game! She loves going for long walks and investigating new surroundings. Maisie thrives on human company and she will do her best to please you.

Maisie loves people so much that she occasionally forgets her manners and automatically thinks everybody loves her too, because of this she can be strong on her lead and sometimes finds it hard to concentrate on one thing at a time.  Maisie has lots of potential to learn and, with the right owners, will make a great family pet.

Patch

This is Patch, a stunning 3 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Patch can be shy around new people but once he gets to know you, he wants you to be his friend. This playful boy’s favourite game is fetch. He will play all day long if you let him! Patch enjoys long walks and adores the water, he loves nothing more than to splash around and have fun.

Patch loves to be busy so he is looking for new owners who can keep up with his abundance of energy. Patch can sometimes lack confidence, so he is looking for a quiet adult only home with owners that can help him settle into a new routine.

Tia

This gorgeous girl is Tia. She is a 4 year old crossbreed. Tia is very loving, loyal and full of energy. She loves playing with toys and loves it even more if you play with her! She enjoys her food, loves long walks and she travels very well in the car. Tia likes her energetic lifestyle but she is also a big softy, she loves her cuddles and being made a fuss of.

Tia has basic house training and is very clever so she has lots of potential. However, Tia can be nervous around new people so she is looking for an experienced new owner who has most of their day free. With the right owner, Tia can build her confidence and settle into a new home.

Happy Mother's Day, Norah!

Samantha Davis, Supporter Relations Officer at our Canterbury centre wants to tell you about the centre's 'Top Mum' on this Mother's Day! Over to you, Sam:

Mother’s Day is a day when we can spoil our mums and take them for days out and show them how much they mean to us. So we thought we’d share the story of our ‘Top Mum’ here at Dogs Trust Canterbury and how she deserves lots of love and affection and a 2nd chance at the perfect home.

Norah is a 9 year old Boxer Cross who first came to Dogs Trust Canterbury back in July 2005. She was heavily pregnant and a week after her arrival she gave birth to 14 little rascals. She played the role of mum perfectly for the following 8 weeks and all puppies went to their new homes at 2 months old.

Norah had put all her energy into raising her brood of puppies so she spent the next 2 weeks resting and recuperating before she went to her new home. She spent the next 5 years quite happily in her home as queen of the castle but was sadly returned to us last year.

Norah is now looking for her forever home where she can be the ‘baby’ and be looked after by a loving and devoted new owner. The ideal setup for her will be a quiet adult only home where she will have company most of the time. She is quite happy to potter about and enjoys a slow amble in a rural environment. She would prefer to be an only pet so she can get the lion’s share of the love and attention. She can be quite shy and timid of new people and strangers so the adoption process would be slower than normal; she is worth the wait however as she will make a loving addition to the right household once she is settled in.

Canine Care Card brings sparky couple into centre

Many dog owners worry about where their canine companion would end up if the worse were to happen to them. Dogs Trust created the Canine Care Card for this very reason. The free service ensures peace of mind that if you were to pass away first, your dog would be cared for at one of our 17 rehoming centres around the UK and given the chance to find a new loving home.

We’ve just had two great friends, Rocket and Sparkle come into our Canterbury centre. Their owner had registered for the Canine Care Card and this meant we were on hand to care for them.

Rocket, a six year old male Labrador, and Sparkle, a four year old female Cavalier, are beautiful dogs that came in together after their owner sadly passed away and are looking to be rehomed as a pair.

They are looking for a home together as they’ve always been a pair and would like to be the only pets in the home so they can get all the fuss they deserve. They’ve had a troublesome few months so are looking for a quiet home where they won’t be left for longer than 3 hours so they can rebuild their confidence in a new environment. Any children in the home should be 14 years plus as they’ve been used to older, calmer owners in the past.

The youngest of the doggy duo, Sparkle loves being out and about and often gets into mischief! Rocket, the older gentleman prefers a calmer approach and loves to plod through the woods. Rocket is quite nervous of other dogs but once settled this can be worked on and managed. Both dogs would benefit from some basic training to keep their brains active.

Rocket is incredibly soppy and loves a calm walk in any weather. He enjoys treats and gets excited whenever he sees one in your hand. He is so affectionate and tries getting as much of himself on your lap as possible. Rocket is a little shy of new people but when he knows them, he greets them excitedly.

Sparkle is a real character. Her carers say she can be as mad as a hatter, but loves attention and a cuddle on your lap. Sparkle loves her walks and the minute you pick up her lead, she gets incredibly excited and is out of the door quicker than you could imagine! Sparkle is affectionate, loyal and adores Rocket.

Dog of the Week: Theo @ Dogs Trust Newbury

Breed: Hound Type Crossbreed

Age: 8

Likes: I absolutely love fetch and ball games. I am quite strong as well, so I am generally better off with adults than children.

Dislikes: Chaos. I need a calm home. I can get possessive about my food, sometimes too.

Needs: I'd love a quiet home with people who can continue training and making a fuss of me the way they do at the Rehoming Centre.

STICKY DOG:
Theo is a ‘Sticky Dog’ which means he has been at the Rehoming Centre for over six months and is still looking for a loving new family. Sometimes dogs become sticky because they don’t like being in a kennel environment and don’t show themselves off well even though they’re fine outside. Some are sticky purely because of their looks as they are not particularly ‘pretty’ and some require a very specific kind of home.

Dogs Trust cares for such dogs for as long as it takes to find that special home. We never put a healthy dog down.

Likes: We're known as the 'dynamic duo' or 'Little & Large' because we go everywhere together. George likes playing in water, going for walks and finding hidden biscuits, and Phoebe loves a good cuppa, a play with a tennis ball and a squeaky toy.

Dislikes: None, really. We even get on with other dogs!

Needs: We want to be rehomed together! We have too strong an attachment to be separated. We'd both be happy to live with older children, and we're housetrained.

Colour: White and beige, although I prefer the term ‘golden’

Age: 15

Who's your favourite two-legged friend at Dogs Trust? My Mum, Hollie, we’ve been best friends ever since I was a pup! I’m very friendly with everyone here at the office as well of course.

Who's your favourite four-legged friend at Dogs Trust? I have so many dog friends it’s difficult to choose just one! I’m fond of Reuben and Poppy as we’ve been on holiday a few times. I’m also like Charlie, who I share an office with.

What's your favourite toy? I’m a little old for toys…does my bed count?

What's your favourite treat? Anything fishy, I especially love a sprinkle of tuna juice on my dinner.

What do you dream about? I dream about loads of things but I can never remember what I dreamt of by the time I wake up!

Where's the best place to take a walk? As I’m an old lady now I’m not too keen on walking long distances. My Mum bought me a dog buggy from America so that she can push me along the street when I get too tired.

What are you favourite activities? I like to model for Dogs Trust, you may have seen me on various posters and leaflets over the years! I also like to rub my nose on people’s legs, bark at water, and take long naps and going to my hydrotherapy sessions.

What's the one thing you can't stand? Having my coat brushed!

What do your humans like best about you? They always tell me I’m a beautiful looking dog. I always blush when they say this!

How did you meet your humans? My Mum picked me out of a litter of pups when I was 8 weeks old.

Louise the Terrier enters sponsored Swimathon for hospital!

When we said "sponsor a dog", this isn't quite what we meant...! Energetic Terrier Louise just had to put her talents to the test by taking part in a sponsored swim for Hillingdon Hospital. The Peter Pan Children's Ward at the hospital is benefitting not only for the money Louise will raise practising her doggy paddle, but from her company and cuddles which will cheer the young residents.

You see, the talented Terrier, who is just 18 months old, has been living at Dogs Trust Harefield (West London) while she seeks her forever home. She's an affectionate, fun loving, free spirited bundle of energy who loves a good run, game of football or, of course, swim.

Despite her good nature, Louise has remained at Harefield for almost a year waiting for the right, experienced, action-packed owners to take her home. Owners who would be willing to spend plenty of time playing and introducing her to activities like Flyball would be ideal; she's naturally great with children and gets on well with other dogs and cats.

Urgent Rehoming Appeal: Leeds and Newbury

The aftermath to Christmas is still being felt in Rehoming Centres across the country, where the Dogs Trust phrase of 30 years - A Dog Is For Life, Not Just For Christmas - is still not being heeded.

Leeds Rehoming Centre has taken in 25 puppies in the last two weeks alone, and is in desperate need of new homes to send them to. 11 week old crossbreed Ash (pictured) was found in a burnt-out car just days ago, whereas some pups were born at the centre when their mother was found wandering in a garden and brought in to us just days before giving birth.

Amanda Sands Dogs Trust Leeds Rehoming Centre Manager says:

“We’ve got puppies of all shapes and sizes which we’re desperate to find fab new homes for. Anyone interested should come along to the Rehoming Centre and see if we’ve got the perfect puppy for them”.

Due to the increasing numbers of puppies being found, Dogs Trust Leeds now offer puppy presentations to anyone considering taking on a puppy from them. They are hoping to ensure people are realistic about what they’re taking on and also show how rewarding rehoming a puppy can be.

Meanwhile, in Newbury, Casper the nine-month-old white pup is far from ghostly but definitely friendly. He's had a hard start in life, having arrived at the Rehoming Centre with deformed front legs which mean he can't do all the things a puppy should.

Thankfully staff took him to a specialist vet who has carried out corrective surgery and although he will need one further operation, he’s feeling better already.

Dogs Trust Veterinary Director Chris Laurence explains:

“It’s possible that a fall or an inadequate diet caused Casper’s bones to grow abnormally. It’s fortunate he’s so young because the operations will be significantly more effective than if he was older and his bones had stopped growing or he had developed arthritis as a result of the deformity”.

Cheeky Casper hasn’t been trained and likes to have fun chasing things so his new owner will need the patience to work with him. However they needn’t worry about veterinary fees for further operations on his legs as they will be covered under the Dogs Trust’s brilliant Part-foster Scheme. Under the scheme Dogs Trust undertakes to pay for the treatment of specific medical conditions present at the time of adoption with the proviso that the adopter pays the first £7.50 of each relevant veterinary bill.

St George's Day Appeal: Do you have room in your life for George?

While I was busy celebrating some famous British breeds, Dogs Trust's Rehoming Centre in Darlington was putting out a plea on behalf of a beautiful four-month-old German Shepherd / Akita Cross called... George!
