Dog of the Week: Casper @ Dogs Trust Bridgend

Slightly belated due to the Greyhound campaign taking precedence on Friday.

Introducing... Casper!

Breed: Shih Tzu Crossbreed

Age: 6

Likes and Dislikes: In common with quite a few Shih Tzu's Dogs Trust has had recently, I have a strong personality so I'm not a lapdog! When I get used to you I will be very affectionate and loving, but until then I'll be a bit wary, especially when being handled. I'm told I was 'in a terrible condition' when I came into the centre, and their gentle care has turned me into this proud fella. See my smile? Great, isn't it?

Needs: Patience, mainly. If you don't crowd me and give me time to adjust, I'll be your best friend for life. I can happily live with another dog, though children and cats are out.

Contact: Call Dogs Trust Bridgend on 01656 725219 or see the Dogs Trust website for other dogs needing homes.

Dog of the Week: Ernie @ Dogs Trust Newbury

Introducing... Ernie!

Age: 6

Breed: Crossbreed

Likes: Other dogs, playing and especially fetch! I'm full of beans, so I need an active family to help wear me out.

Dislikes: Not keen on being left on my own, and I will vocally let you know about it, but I'm fine if I've got another canine pal for company.

Contact: Call Dogs Trust Newbury on 01488 658391 or see more dogs needing homes online.

Dog of the Week: Buster @ West Calder

Introducing... Buster!

There are so many deserving dogs of the week, that blog editor Alex had to ask our Twitter followers which one she should choose! @jrJuliejr chose me because her kids 'love my smile' and she enjoyed visiting me recently! Thanks, Julie.

Age: 10

Breed: Large Crossbreed

Likes and Dislikes: I'm a friendly, eager fellow who is a great favourite with walkers and volunteers who reward me with the biscuits I love! I'm housetrained and not destructive, but I do get a little anxious being left for long, so I'd need some work on that once I was securely settled in.

My favourite thing is getting off the lead to play football or dog tug-of-war! Don't be fooled by my age - there's plenty of life and enthusiasm in this slightly-older dog yet.

I'm fine with kids, but not cats. I'm sociable and happy to share my kennel with both male and female dogs.

Needs: I was well cared for in my last home, but developed a very strong bond with my owner to the point that I have a few anxieties and nervous behaviours. My carers say my new owner needs to be experienced and confident to help me get along and gently work on my fears without accidentally reinforcing them.

Contact: Call Dogs Trust West Calder on 01506 873459 or look online for more of my friends who need homes.

Dogs of the Week: Mutt-erly Love @ Dogs Trust Evesham

A slightly different format for the dog of the week this week!

Dogs Trust Evesham has seen Mother's Day come and go, but is still looking for homes for a couple of family pairings who'd like to stick together.

First meet 8 year old Tara and her 5 year old son Basil. Both are very cheery, friendly dogs and could live with children aged over eight. Dogs Trust staff say they need to find a home together because their family bond is so tight that they could become depressed without each other for company.

The second pooch pair are 10 year old Mamma May and her 5 year old daughter Anna. Mamma May is a happy old soul but daughter Anna worries if they are not together. They can live with children aged over twelve and may be able to share a home with cats.

Chris Slight, Dogs Trust centre manager, explains:

“I know lots of parents joke about their grown-up offspring who just won’t leave home, but both of these mother and son or daughter pairs adore each other so much it would be heartbreaking to rehome them separately.

They are looking for understanding owners who will provide lots of love and the occasional meaty treat, and Dogs Trust will be on hand to support new owners with training.”

If you are interested in rehoming Tara and Basil or Mamma May and Anna please contact Dogs Trust Evesham on 01386 830613.

Dog of the Week: Solomon @ Dogs Trust Salisbury

Introducing... Solomon!

Age: 7

Breed: Labrador Crossbreed

Likes: I'm a dapper fellow who has two great loves: food and my female doggy pals. I'm playful and affectionate, friendly with people and dogs (boys too, though I show favouritism to girls!), and came into care through no fault of my own.

Dislikes: None, really! I'm a well-behaved lad. I even get on with children provided they're sensible and not too young.

Needs: A family!

Dog of the Week: Robbie @ Dogs Trust West Calder

Introducing... Robbie!

Age: 2

Breed: Crossbreed

Likes: I had a pretty rough start in life, being alternately mistreated and neglected, so my favourite thing is being treated really gently and lovingly. Once you've gained my trust, my favourite thing is curling up on your lap and getting a lovely cuddle! Long walks and fetch / tug games are also high on my list of fun things to do. I'm currently living with a foster family and getting on well with them and their three friendly dogs, and I'm gaining confidence gradually.

Dislikes: I find it hard to trust people, and men in particular, though I've come a long way in the foster programme, Home from Home.

Needs: I'll need patient adult owners, preferably who don't have any other pets although I could benefit from a calm, older female who'll help me keep making progress. I'm very clean in the house but couldn't be left alone much. Dogs Trust have said they'll be there to help my new owners every step of the way, and they know from experience that when I feel happier I'm the most playful and affectionate friend you could have.

Dog of the Week: Carna @ Dogs Trust Snetterton

Introducing... Carna!

Age: 8

Breed: Beagle Crossbreed

Likes: I'm super-friendly, sociable and excitable! I love the company of people and dogs, especially if I'm having a nice lead walk. I'm told my big brown eyes are thoroughly irresistible!

Dislikes: I'm not keen on big cuddles.

Needs: I'm told that despite only being half-Beagle, I'm quite typical of the breed, so if you know a lot about Beagles it would be especially good to hear from you. I don't mind older kids, say 14-16+, either, and would happily share with another dog.

Dog of the Week: Holly @ Dogs Trust Canterbury

Introducing... Holly!

Breed: Chocolate Crossbreed

Age: 2

Likes: I can be a bit nervous, so I like a calm, quiet atmosphere with gentle people around. I'm pretty good with other dogs, too. I've never met a cat, so I might like them - I'm not sure!

Dislikes: Noise and stressful situations make me scared.

Needs: I would love calm, experienced and understanding adult owners to make a fuss of me and help me get used to a forever home.

New Year fitness challenge for massively overweight pooch

Meet Patch. He's a Beagle Cross currently living at Dogs Trust Glasgow. He's six years old, and weighs as much as a six year old... child, that is.

At a whopping 4.5 stone (28.45kg), Patch is almost twice the weight he should be and the Glasgow staff have set him a goal weight of 2.4 stone (15kg). Patch came to the centre when his elderly owner - who obviously adored and spoiled him - sadly passed away. The path to fitness will not be easy; Patch is so fat he can't even walk, let alone run, the pounds off, and needs to be lifted using a harness. Right now exercise could be extremely dangerous and he needs to gently take a few pounds off first.

Dogs Trust's Veterinary Director Chris Laurence explains:

"Patch has started a special diet, and he must lose weight before he can attempt any exercise. If he loses weight too quickly there's a real risk of organ failure.

He is very lucky he is now in our care. Being grossly obese puts him at risk of heart failur, diabetes, liver disease, pancreatitis and arthritis. The simple physical strain of carrying that much additional weight on his frame would be huge."

The whole community is rallying round to help Patch, with local kennels Allers Farm offering free use of their brand new hydrotherapy pool and staff members at Dogs Trust Glasgow digging out extra layers of bedding to help him be as comfy as possible in his kennel.

He's a wonderfully friendly, loving dog and now he seeks a caring and responsible home where his new owners will give him plenty of fuss and love while taking a tough love approach to his weight loss and resisting giving in to those pleading big brown peepers where treats are concerned.

He could go home now to the right family, and Dogs Trust staff will always be on hand to help and advise his new owners. If you think your family might be the right ones to offer Patch a new lease of life, please call Dogs Trust Glasgow on 0141 773 5130.

Dog of the Week: Rory @ Dogs Trust Canterbury

Introducing... Rory!

Age: 8+

Breed: Collie Cross

Likes: I love a good play, even at my age, and a nice walk around the woods. I do prefer a calm, quiet environment.

Dislikes: Kennels. I'd so much rather be a family home, perhaps with older teenagers who will be patient with me and help me settle in. Also cats - bleargh!

Needs: I don't mind a little alone time, but I'd rather be the only pooch in the pad as I love fuss and attention.

Contact: Call Dogs Trust Canterbury on 01227 792505 or see more dogs needing homes online.

Dog of the Week: Hinny @ Dogs Trust Kenilworth

Introducing... Hinny!

Age: 5

Breed: Rhodesian Ridgeback Crossbreed

Likes: I'm a friendly lad who loves company more than anything and who has been overlooked for no particular reason my carers can think of! I get on well with older children and other dogs, too.

Dislikes: I'm not very keen on being left alone for long periods of time.

Needs: I'm best off with owners who have experience of big breed dogs which is why I'm really better suited to teenagers, too!

Happy New Year! A heartwarming reminder to start the year...

I was sitting here struggling to think of a good way to start the New Year online. Should I just wish everyone a happy New Year? Thank all our wonderful supporters for their ongoing support even in these troubled times? Focus on a dog that needs a home at the moment?

All of these seemed like good ideas, but then I came across this post by the wondrous Christie Keith, whom I'm as fond of for her personal and political blogging as for her regular posts at the brilliant Pet Connection.

What Christie's post comes down to is that we should always remember to celebrate good pet ownership and withhold knee-jerk judgement. And I couldn't agree with her more.

So often we hear story after brutal story of abuse and inhumanity towards man's best friend(s). There are undoubtedly people out there who are irresponsible, cruel, unkind, thoughtless... the adjectives go on and none of them are pleasant. There are also people whose reasons for abandoning a dog fill us with baffled disbelief. Sometimes it's painfully necessary to dwell on this reality and we do what we can every day to fight against this through education, campaigning and care for dogs.

Other times - and I think New Year is one of them - it's also important to look at the flipside. The fact that for every one deliberately or heedlessly irresponsible owner, there are also thousands of kind, generous, caring individuals who will put themselves out - financially or otherwise - to help a companion animal.

It can sound counterintuitive, but there are good reasons for surrendering a dog to a rehoming centre. There are dogs who come to us because their owners have recently died, and the rest of the family (if there is any) cannot give the dog a suitable home. There are dogs whose owners have admitted to themselves that they didn't know enough about raising a pup before they bought one, and are now out of their depths in terms of the time, money and effort it takes to train a dog; once the deed is done, I'd much rather they gave the dog away to us than continued to struggle to turn out a canine good citizen who might develop fear or aggression issues and ultimately be put down needlessly.

Then of course there are the thousands of supporters who enable us to care for those dogs by raising money or donating goods, time and skills, or who open their doors to yet another dog when they thought that the household was already full. There are the staff members, volunteers and local animal lovers who foster a dog who is kennel-stressed, or in danger of being put down for lack of a home - though naturally that wouldn't be the case at Dogs Trust as we never, ever put a healthy dog down.

Today, as those of us lucky enough to have a workplace to go to head grumbling back to our desks, I want to take the opportunity to thank not just Dogs Trust supporters, but all those people who give an active, happy, healthy life to their pets and who should be applauded and held up as a positive example.

Here's wishing you all a very Happy New Year - pets and people!

Christmas Dog of the Week: Tiger @ Dogs Trust Evesham

Although our Rehoming Centres do not send any dogs home during the upheaval of the Christmas period, there are some dogs who are hoping that, as much as they love their carers, this is their last Christmas without a family of their own. One such is this little fellow, who is about to celebrate his 2nd Christmas at Evesham Rehoming Centre.

Introducing... Tiger!

Age: 4-5

Breed: Terrier

Likes: I'm a bouncy, energetic chap who loves toys and needs plenty of long walks and an active family. I was found as a stray in June 2007 and no-one can work out why I've been overlooked for a new home so far!

Dislikes: I am not very keen on kennels; I'm so ready for a proper family life that it's stressing me out a bit. As a result I don't want to share my space with other pets.

Needs: I'm told I'm a very bright boy, so people who like to train and teach dogs tricks would find a very rewarding companion in me! I'm happy to live with older children (12+), too.

Contact: Call Dogs Trust Evesham on 01386 830613 or see more dogs needing homes online.

Dog of the Week: Isobel @ Dogs Trust Ilfracombe

Introducing... Isobel!

Age: 5

Breed: Dalmatian

Likes: I am deaf, which is relatively common among my breed. I like going out and playing with other dogs, am very good on the lead and am quite happy to live with cats, although I do try to steal their food!

Dislikes: I'm pretty relaxed, as long as things aren't too bustling; I can't hear so sudden moves are a bit scary.

Needs: I did go to one home for a few weeks but as I need that extra bit of time, effort, training and socialisation I could not stay there and came back to Dogs Trust, where I'm looking for a quiet but active home. I'd love an owner with either Dalamatian experience or a willingness to research the breed and make sure I'd fit in with their lifestyle.

Long term resident Evie finds a home through the Internet

Dogs Trust Ballymena had become the home of a beautiful Collie called Evie for almost a year. Having been abandoned at the Northern Ireland centre last Christmas Eve, Evie was not best suited to the kennel environment, and struggled to show off her best qualities. She became withdrawn, and since Dogs Trust never put a healthy dog down, we were committed to trying everything to find her a home.

Then the Internet came to the rescue! Elizabeth Forsyth was scanning the Dogs Trust website, and came across Evie's picture. Looking at it now, it's not hard to see why she fell in love. However, Elizabeth lives across the Irish Sea from Ballymena in Jedburgh, in the Scottish Borders. Being an experienced Collie owner, Elizabeth was sure she and Evie were a perfect match. All she had to do was convince Dogs Trust that she was right.

That she did, in consultation with staff at both Ballymena and her nearest centre, West Calder; it is rare that we move a dog from centre to centre but if there is a good chance of them finding the right home by doing so (and they have been at the existing centre for some time without luck) then it could be considered. West Calder carried out the necessary home check, and only then was Evie taken over to Scotland to meet Elizabeth. The rest, as they say, is history!

Elizabeth explained:
"As soon as I saw Evie on the screen, I knew that she was the one. I had been looking for a Collie her age since I lost my last dog in July. Evie has settled in so well, loves the garden and sleeps all night in her cosy bed. It is a joy to see her running happy and free in the woods. I could not have picked a better gentle and kind companion."
Staff at Ballymena found parting with the lovely Evie sad, but are overjoyed that she has found the right home for life. We will never give up on a dog no matter how long it takes for the right home to be found, and as a web person I'm also glad to see that the website is doing its job and helping to match homes to dogs. As an organisation we can only do what we do because of committed owners like Elizabeth, so thank you for giving Evie a well-deserved second chance.

Dog of the Week: Dollar @ Dogs Trust Canterbury

Introducing... Dollar!

Age: 15 months

Breed: Crossbreed

Likes: I'm young and lively but I can get nervous, so I'm most fond of quiet surroundings. I have had other dogs with me since I was a tiny pup, so I really do want a companion to show me the ropes.

Dislikes: I can get a bit nervous and worried in unfamiliar circumstances.

Needs: Patient adult humans who will help me trust people again, and a friendly four-legged companion to help me settle in.

Dog of the Week: Shadow @ Dogs Trust Glasgow

Introducing... Shadow!

Age: 12

Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier Crossbreed

Likes: I'm a very cuddly girl and love to be fussed over. I've been known to doze off and start snoring in my carer's arms as there's nothing I love more than being snuggled up.

Dislikes: As long as I'm loved, I'm happy!

Needs: My owner, who had me from a puppy, sadly passed away early this year and the family handed me in to Dogs Trust because there was no-one to look after me. I'm fussed over and spoiled here, but I'd love to be part of a proper home again. I need a bit of TLC and patience because of my age, but I've still got a lot of love left to give. Caring for an older dog can be really rewarding - just look at what this owner of an oldie has to say!

First dog rehoming through Twitter sees Suzie from Ballymena finding a home!

It started with a woolly-haired dog picture, and a mild resemblance to Kevin Keegan's hair heyday. I found it cute enough to put on Twitter, and that's where supporter @emmao414 saw it. It turned out that she lives near Dogs Trust Ballymena, and was quite won over by Gia's good looks. Knowing her mum was in the market for a new pal, she swiftly called the centre to make sure Gia was still available, and headed over the same afternoon for a visit, having very sensibly done some research into Irish Water Spaniels.

Although Gia turned out to be a bit big and exuberant for her family, Emma and her mum found their heads turned by a gorgeous six-year-old Pomeranian cross called Suzie, who's all set to move into her new home at 2:30pm today! This is the first time we have been able to make a match through one of our social network pages, and we're so pleased that this strategy is beginning to work for supporters and dogs alike. To our knowledge, it's the first time any animal charity has used Twitter in this way, and we plan to work hard to make this the first of many.

You can click to enlarge the picture above to see the actual online exhange that took place, but all that really remains is to fervently thank Emma and her family for choosing to adopt a rescue dog. We hope Suzie settles in quickly and has a wonderful life with you!

By the way, Gia is still seeking a home, so if you're interested in the curly haired beauty, please do give Ballymena a call on 028 2565 2977!

Dog of the Week: Jake @ Dogs Trust Darlington

Introducing... Jake!

Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Age: 8

Likes: I'm a fun loving dog who loves being around people. Through no fault of my own I've lived at Dogs Trust more than once and would love a permanent home now.

Dislikes: I'm not particularly keen on other dogs as I don't like sharing my owner's attention!

Needs: I'm told I'm a bit exuberant for younger kids so it would be nice to have a household with children 16 or over who understand Staffies and are willing to be as active as I am.

Contact: Dogs Trust Darlington on 01325 333114 or visit Dogs Trust Rehoming Online for more information about adopting a dog.

Lord Mayor's Show 2008: Dogs Trust dancing dog float!

Here at Dogs Trust we were proud to be part of the annual Lord Mayor's Show once again. Our float was dusted off and spruced up, and a new bunch of dogs looking for homes were taken on a lovely long walk through central London.

It was my first year volunteering, and my fiance decided he didn't want to miss out on all the fun. Luckily, he was on hand to ferry Iggle, a 1-year-old Jack Russell bitch, around when she decided she was a bit too tired to continue after spending the morning running around with excitement; she sat on the back of the float with me for the second half of the parade and having been really hyperactive during the morning she did nod off a bit when being held, as you can see from the photo below...

Four members of the canine gang (above) were also on hand in their fluffy costumes to dance away to canine classics such as "Who Let the Dogs Out?" and "How Much is That Doggy in the Window?" (not that we advocate selling dogs, of course!).

For the first half of the walk, which started at London Wall and wound through the City of London, I was bouncing about making sure the other walkers were okay, and then I took charge of Maple, a gorgeous black Labrador and the bouncy Iggle's kennel mate. We were positioned just one float behind an open backed lorry in which sausages were being cooked; Maple had to be persuaded to keep moving and not clean up every single bit of fallen sausage along the way. I also had to stop her bolting off after the lorry! She's a really well-behaved girl, with people and with other dogs, but food and Labs is definitely a challenging combination!

Iggle got plenty of attention, of course, being such a cutie, but we think we found a home for Billy the Greyhound too, when a Westminster councillor fell in love with his graceful ex-racer body and gentle temperament. We're keeping our fingers crossed that it works out for the two of them!

I'm not usually one for sentiment, but it was incredibly moving to see how many people - especially children - cheered loudly at the float and shouted "We love Dogs Trust!" or "thank you!". One woman who approached us at lunchtime showed excellent common sense, asking her children to request permission to handle the dogs and approach them slowly and confidently. She was setting a brilliant example and Education Officer Natalie Dexter and I were very impressed.

My thanks must got to Katy Heaphy and Charlotte Speedy who organised the event brilliantly, and also to Sophia Fergus, who somehow tracked down some rain ponchos at lunchtime, without which might have drowned altogether. As it was we had a very damp, but accomplished, journey home, and everyone said they look forward to doing it all again next year.

All the dogs that walked with us are current residents of Dogs Trust West London (Harefield). Please do call the centre today on 0845 076 DOGS (3647) if you're interested in adopting one of them, or any other dog.

Video to follow!
